Everness Tier List Early Rankings ...

Neverness to Everness hands you a surprisingly strong starting roster before you ever touch the gacha banner. Two S-class characters, four A-class characters, and a one-time selector for a seventh S-class are all sitting there waiting to be claimed. Knowing exactly where each one comes from lets you plan your team compositions from day one and spend your pulls on limited-banner characters who actually fill gaps.

All Free Characters

There are exactly six permanently available free characters at launch, plus a selector tied to the Standard Board.

Zero

Zero is your protagonist and the first S-class character on your account. You pick male or female at character creation, and both versions share identical abilities and stats, so this is purely a cosmetic choice.

Zero's kit revolves around the Cosmos element and offers decent AOE alongside a minor self-sustain mechanic tied to the Charge reaction (Lakshana + Cosmos + Anima). The most useful thing Zero does mechanically is fully charge the Esper Meter on Ultimate use, which makes rotating through quick-swap teams significantly smoother. Zero also shares the Cosmos element with Chiz, meaning these two can anchor an Esper Wheel together with early free characters.

According to Mobalytics' guide, Zero is worth investing in only if you plan to skip pulling banner characters entirely. Once you have dedicated limited-banner DPS options, Zero typically slots into a utility role rather than a carry position.

Chiz

Chiz is the free character that matters most for players who want a strong main DPS without spending. She is an S-class Cosmos character unlocked through City Tycoon, a side activity that requires reaching a specific progression threshold (Level 18 according to Insider Gaming). She is not available from the start, so expect to invest some time before she joins your roster.

Her kit is built around a resource called Grain, displayed as a bar at the bottom of the screen. Basic attacks build Grain stacks, and her skill has three charges that each deal more damage proportional to your current Grain level. The higher the Grain bar, the harder those skill hits land.

Notably, Chiz's entire progression path is free. According to Mobalytics, all of her duplicates (awakenings), her signature weapon, and all weapon duplicates are obtained through City Tycoon at no gacha cost. Her playstyle was considered one of the harder kits to master during beta testing, but according to the same source, the launch version is significantly more accessible while retaining the high damage ceiling.

Haniel, Aurelia, Mint, and Adler: the A-class four

These four A-class characters cover support, AOE damage, and shielding. None of them require gacha pulls beyond the very first one.

Haniel (Psyche, ATK Buffer)

Haniel is a pure support whose job is buffing your team's attack stat. She received a small buff between the beta and global launch that improved her buff output, and a fix addressed an issue where she was being interrupted by enemies mid-animation. According to Mobalytics, she fits cleanly into the starter team alongside Zero and Chiz even without contributing to Esper reactions directly. Worth investing in.

Aurelia (Psyche, AOE DPS)

Aurelia arrives on Day 3 of the login reward event. Her Ultimate groups enemies together, and all of her skills deal AOE damage. She enters an enhanced state through her skill that further amplifies that AOE output. Her best elemental synergies are Nova (Psyche + Chaos) and Discord (Incantation + Psyche + Chaos), making her a natural pairing with Chaos characters like Daffodil and Incantation characters like Adler. Worth investing in.

Mint (Anima, AOE DPS)

Mint is the poster character for Neverness to Everness and unlocks automatically after finishing the Prologue. She works well alongside Zero because both sit on the same Esper Wheel, and she boosts the AOE of the Blossom reaction (Cosmos + Anima). That said, Mobalytics notes that Nanally is a strict upgrade over Mint in essentially every way, and Jiuyuan also outperforms her. Mint is a solid early-game carry but not a long-term investment priority.

Adler (Incantation, Shielder / DPS)

Adler unlocks when you reach the Eibon Antique Shop through main story progression. He provides shields with generic team value, applies DoT damage, and can operate both on-field and off-field. His early-game pairing with Mint procs the Hexed reaction (Anima + Incantation), and his shields remain useful for surviving the hardest endgame content. Worth investing in.

What is the Standard Board Selector?

After completing 50 pulls on the Standard Board, every account receives a one-time selector to choose any single S-class character from the standard pool. This is a free account reward, not a pity system.

The six characters available in the selector are:

  • Baicang (Incantation, Bose, Main DPS, DoT)
  • Daffodil (Chaos, Liquid, Burst DPS, Break Boost)
  • Fadia (Psyche, Bose, Damage Prevention, Sustain)
  • Hathor (Lakshana, Plasma, Burst DPS, AOE)
  • Jiuyuan (Anima, Solid, Burst DPS, Control)
  • Sakiri (Incantation, Gas, Support Buffer, Control)

According to neverness.gg, the first 50 pulls on the Standard Board come with a 20% discount, reducing 10-pull multis from 10 Fabricated Dice to 8. That brings the effective cost down to 40 pulls rather than 50, and pre-registration rewards plus login bonuses can get you there quickly.

The selector does not expire, so there is no pressure to use it right away. Mobalytics recommends picking a Burst DPS or Support over a Main DPS, since those roles tend to resist powercreep better over time.

How should you build your early team?

With the six free characters plus your selector pick, you have enough pieces to run a functional team from day one. The most natural early combination pairs Zero and Chiz as your Cosmos backbone, Haniel as your ATK buffer, and a flex slot for either Adler (for shields and DoT) or Aurelia (for AOE burst). Mint can fill the flex slot early before you have better Anima options.

Once you have your selector pick, that seventh character should either fill a role your current team is missing or complement the limited-banner DPS you are building toward. Mobalytics specifically calls out Nanally and Hotori as high-value limited-banner targets worth saving gacha currency for.
