Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's open world evolves another step beyond Rebirth. Director Naoki Hamaguchi on map design, player freedom, and new battle systems - AUTOMATON WEST

The trilogy that started with a 2015 reveal and has been rebuilding one of gaming's most beloved RPGs from the ground up is almost at its finish line. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the third and final chapter in Square Enix's Remake series, is targeting a Spring 2027 launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. But for players who prefer a disc on the shelf over a digital license, there's a real question hanging over this release.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth set the bar high as the middle chapter of the trilogy, winning 40 Game of the Year awards and establishing director Naoki Hamaguchi as one of the most capable stewards the FF7 universe has ever had. Now, with Revelation deep in its final development stretch, Hamaguchi has been candid about what he wants for the game's release, even if Square Enix hasn't made any formal announcements.

What Hamaguchi said at Fan Fest Berlin

This past weekend, Hamaguchi appeared on stage in Berlin at Final Fantasy Fan Fest alongside Naoki Yoshida, director of Final Fantasy 14. The event was primarily focused on announcing FF7-themed raids coming to FF14's upcoming Evercold expansion, a crossover that both directors confirmed was born out of the proximity of the two games' release windows.

But in conversations surrounding Revelation's development, Hamaguchi made clear that his personal preference is for the game to receive a physical release. Here's the thing: that preference hasn't translated into an official Square Enix commitment yet. For a franchise with a fanbase that has been collecting physical editions for nearly three decades, that gap between a director's wishes and a publisher's silence is worth paying attention to.

important
Square Enix has not officially confirmed a physical release for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation as of July 2026. Hamaguchi's comments reflect his personal wishes, not a confirmed product announcement.

Why this matters more for Revelation than most games

The physical release question isn't just about nostalgia. Revelation is the conclusion to a story that has been unfolding across three major releases spanning years of development. A significant portion of the fanbase has been collecting physical copies of Remake and Rebirth with the explicit intention of completing the set. No physical edition of Revelation would leave that trilogy incomplete on shelves across the world.

Rebirth itself was a massive, content-dense experience. Hamaguchi noted that Revelation carries a comparable volume of content to Rebirth, and in some cases more, thanks to branching paths and expanded side content. A game of that scale on Switch 2 and current-gen platforms carries real storage considerations that make physical media a practical concern, not just a collector's one.

Revelation's development context heading into 2027

Hamaguchi's Berlin appearance gave a broader picture of where Revelation stands. The core development work is essentially locked in, with the team focused on polish and balance rather than fundamental design changes. The director confirmed several meaningful improvements over Rebirth's design, including adjustable difficulty levels for mini-games, the option to skip mini-games entirely, and a deliberate shift away from tying battle-relevant rewards to optional side content.

That last point directly addresses one of the most common criticisms of Rebirth. Players who wanted certain combat upgrades felt pressured to complete mini-games they had no interest in. Revelation separates those reward tracks, letting players engage with side content on their own terms without feeling like they're leaving power on the table.

The Highwind also makes its full debut as an exploration tool, adding vertical movement to a world map that was previously limited to ground-level traversal. Combined with parachuting and Chocobo flight, Revelation's open world promises a genuinely different feel from the expansive but flat exploration of Rebirth.

For players who want to get up to speed before Revelation launches, the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth beginner's guide covers everything from combat fundamentals to party management across the full game.

What players should watch for

Square Enix tends to announce physical editions and collector's packages well in advance of major releases, particularly for flagship Final Fantasy titles. With Spring 2027 as the target window, the next few months represent the most likely window for any physical edition announcement. Hamaguchi's public comments signal that internal conversations about physical media are happening, even if nothing is confirmed.

For Switch 2 players specifically, the format question carries extra weight given cartridge capacity constraints. If you're planning to pick up Revelation on Nintendo's platform, the FF7 Rebirth on Switch 2 guide breaks down what to expect from the hardware side before committing to a purchase.
