Chaos Cubed Drop | Minecraft

Mojang has been building toward the Chaos Cubed update for a while now, and the first public snapshot just landed for Java Edition. Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 1 is a big one: new underground biome, a genuinely weird new mob, two fresh block sets, and the first live test of Vulkan rendering. There is a lot to process here.

The Sulfur Cube is not a simple slime reskin

The headliner mob is the Sulfur Cube, and it does something no other mob in the game does: it physically changes its behavior based on whatever block you feed it. Feed it wool and it becomes light and floaty. Feed it ice blocks and it turns into a fast, frictionless sliding object with zero bounce. Feed it Soul Sand and it slows to a crawl with high resistance. There are 9 distinct archetypes in total, each defined by speed, bounciness, ground friction, and air drag.

Here's the thing: this is not just a novelty. The Sulfur Cube is a physics object you can interact with. Once it has absorbed a block, it stops taking fall damage and player damage, and you can punch and push it around. A large Sulfur Cube can be scooped into a bucket. Dispensers can swap blocks in and out of it, or shear it to eject the block entirely. Small Sulfur Cubes can be grown into large ones by feeding them Slime Balls.

When killed, it splits into two smaller cubes, just like the Slime before it. But the archetype system is what separates it from anything Mojang has added in years.

What sulfur caves actually look like underground

The Sulfur Caves are a new underground biome that generates beneath hills and mountains. They come with banded layers of sulfur and cinnabar, spawning grounds for Sulfur Cubes and Cave Spiders, and Sulfur Pools filled with Potent Sulfur. That last block is worth paying attention to: place it under up to 4 water source blocks and it generates a nausea gas cloud on the surface that spreads up to 3 blocks in every direction.

Above ground, Sulfur Springs mark where these caves sit below. They generate in four size variants (small, medium, large, extra large) and are made of Sulfur, Potent Sulfur, and Magma Blocks. They are a reliable surface indicator for finding the biome beneath.

The new block sets are Cinnabar and Sulfur, each with polished and brick variants, plus slabs, stairs, walls, and chiseled versions. That is a full construction palette from two brand-new materials. For a deeper look at what the Sulfur Caves contain and how to navigate them, the Minecraft Sulfur Caves guide covers locations, blocks, and mob behavior in detail.

Vulkan rendering arrives in Java Edition snapshots

The other major piece of this snapshot is not a block or a mob. Mojang is now testing Vulkan as the rendering backend for Java Edition, moving away from OpenGL. This is a prerequisite for bringing Vibrant Visuals to Java, and the team has confirmed Vulkan 1.2 with dynamic rendering and push descriptors is the current minimum requirement.

The new Graphics API setting in Video Settings gives players three options: Default (currently Prefer Vulkan), Prefer Vulkan, and Prefer OpenGL. Older hardware that does not support Vulkan 1.2 will fall back to OpenGL automatically. On macOS, Mojang is using MoltenVK to translate Vulkan calls to Metal.

The practical change most players will notice: under Vulkan, the game now prefers your dedicated GPU over integrated graphics. That is a direct reversal from how OpenGL handled it. Mojang is asking players to report bugs through the official tracker, and the team will keep both backends available until they are confident Vulkan is stable enough to finalize.

The snapshot also fixes a handful of long-standing bugs, including dolphins refusing to dismount minecarts at activator rails, incorrect underwater fog at low render distances, and the Ender Dragon's death animation rendering over worn armor.
