Your progression in Phantom Blade 0 comes from acquiring weapons, upgrading them individually, and unlocking weapon-specific Soul Temper enhancements. Early on, use the free weapon-refund window through level 10 to explore your options before committing to higher-level upgrades.
The useful distinction is between access you've earned and power attached to your equipment. Finding a sword expands your arsenal; upgrading it strengthens that particular sword. Reaching Pangzhen adds another enhancement system, while new Phantom Edges open routes to previously inaccessible rewards. Knowing which layer you're working on helps you decide when to spend materials and when to keep exploring.
Launch guide for Phantom Blade 0 on PC and PS5, released October 29, 2026.
What carries your progress forward?
Phantom Blade 0 rewards you for expanding your options as well as strengthening your current equipment. Boss rewards, weapon pickups, side quests, and newly accessible areas all contribute to that progression.
Acquiring weapons gives you different tools
Main weapons have individual combos, special perks, and an unblockable Power Surge that becomes available when their meter is fully charged. The three weapon classes offer different starting points:
- One-handed: balanced weapons, including Sanguine and the Tianxuan Bronze Sword.
- Two-handed: slower weapons with powerful strikes, including Sanguine Reach and Outlaw Warblade.
- Dual-wield: faster weapons with weaker individual strikes, including Sanguine Twin and Fiend Saws.
A new weapon can change more than your attack speed. Outlaw Warblade restores HP through attacks, while the Tianxuan Bronze Sword reduces the Sha-Chi cost of blocking but disables parrying. Those are equipment choices with consequences, not interchangeable damage upgrades.
Exploration replaces repeated enemy farming
Defeated enemies stay dead, so clearing the same group repeatedly is not your progression loop. Push into unexplored territory, investigate side content, and collect upgrade materials throughout each region instead.
Several rewards also depend on returning with a specific Phantom Edge. A blocked passage in an early region can become useful much later, which gives exploration a second job: finding places worth revisiting.
How do progression options become available?
The two main weapon-improvement services arrive at different points. Forge handles weapon upgrades in Weeping Creek Valley, while Myst unlocks Soul Temper after you reach Pangzhen several hours into the campaign.
Meet Forge for individual weapon upgrades
Find Forge at the Weeping Creek Valley Outpost to begin upgrading weapons. Each weapon levels separately, with additional perks unlocking at levels 5, 10, 15, and 25.
Those perk thresholds give you something more useful to check than a higher damage value. Before spending materials, look at what the next threshold adds to the weapon you actually want to use.

Use refunds before making a larger investment
You can recover all invested Remnant Dust and upgrade materials for free through weapon level 10. Above level 10, a refund requires a Weapon Reforge Talisman.
That makes the level 5 and level 10 perks useful comparison points. You can examine more of a weapon's capabilities without immediately crossing into upgrades that require an item to reverse.
For help choosing early weapons and planning side trips around your upgrades, use the beginner strategies guide.
Speak with Myst for Soul Temper
Visit Myst's Tavern in Pangzhen and talk to Myst. This unlocks the Soul Temper prompt in the upgrades menu, giving you separate tabs for main weapons and Phantom Edges.
A Soul Temper requires a material tied to that particular weapon and 5,000 Remnant Dust. Finding an enhancement material for one weapon does not make it a general-purpose upgrade for your arsenal.
Soul Temper effects can substantially alter an existing mechanic. Blood Oath Dagger increases Dread Axe's charge speed by 30%, while Song of Parting makes Parting Hooks automatically counter after you parry a blue-flash attack.
Some enhancements require multiple components. Serpent's Memory, for White Serpent & Crimson Viper, involves fragments in the Red, Black, Green, and White Serpent Houses. Collecting one fragment is only part of that upgrade path.
Permanent improvements versus equipment choices
Acquired weapons and unlocked services expand what you can access during the campaign. Weapon levels, perks, and Soul Temper effects determine the capabilities of particular equipment. Keeping those categories separate makes spending decisions much clearer.
| Progression option | What it changes | How to approach it |
|---|---|---|
| Acquiring a main weapon | Adds another weapon with its own attacks, perks, and Power Surge | Collect options, then compare how their mechanics work |
| Unlocking Forge's service | Makes weapon upgrades available | Check individual weapon levels and upcoming perks |
| Raising a weapon's level | Improves that weapon and unlocks perks at levels 5, 10, 15, and 25 | Use the free-refund window through level 10 before investing further |
| Unlocking Myst's Soul Temper service | Adds enhancement tabs for main weapons and Phantom Edges | Bring the matching material and 5,000 Remnant Dust |
| Applying a Soul Temper | Enhances or changes a specific weapon's mechanics | Choose effects that support how you use that weapon |
| Obtaining a traversal-relevant Phantom Edge | Lets you interact with particular obstacles | Revisit locations blocked by the corresponding obstacle |
| Upgrading accessories | Improves a separate equipment category handled by Jewel | Keep accessory upgrades distinct from Forge's weapon upgrades |
Why does the equipped weapon matter so much?
The Tianxuan Bronze Sword is the clearest example. Its Natural Order perk makes blocking cheaper in Sha-Chi, but it removes parrying entirely. If your parry suddenly stops working after changing weapons, check the perk before blaming your timing.
Its Soul Temper, Bronze Essence, adds another defensive option: you can continue blocking after your guard breaks by spending a small amount of HP. That enhancement belongs to the Tianxuan Bronze Sword's defensive setup.
Which improvements should you prioritize early?
Start by collecting accessible weapons near your route, then use Forge's upgrade and refund systems to compare them. This is especially useful before you take a weapon beyond level 10.
Collect the nearby alternatives first
Sanguine and Wooden Sanguine are available by default. You can add Sanguine Twin and Sanguine Reach through early pickups rather than hunting down an additional boss.
| Early option | Where to get it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sanguine | Available by default | Starting with a balanced one-handed weapon |
| Wooden Sanguine | Available by default as the tutorial sword | Comparing another starting one-handed option |
| Sanguine Twin | Weapon rack along the path after meeting Yu'er in the forest | Trying the faster dual-wield class |
| Sanguine Reach | Weapon rack beside Forge | Trying slower, heavier two-handed attacks |
Pick up Sanguine Reach when you meet Forge because the weapon rack is right beside him. Collect Sanguine Twin after meeting Yu'er if you want to compare dual-wield attacks before investing further in a one-handed weapon.

Add an early dual-wield option
Compare perks before crossing level 10
Use the level 5 and level 10 thresholds to judge a weapon's developing mechanics. A weapon that suits your preferred defense or attack rhythm is a better candidate for further investment than one you chose solely because of its class.
For example, Jagged Steel builds an enemy's bleed gauge, while Outlaw Warblade offers lifesteal. Both effects have restrictions against puppets, golden bodies, and phantom bodies, so their special mechanics will not solve every encounter.
Check all five ribbons in the Village of Lu
If you want more weapon options, interact with all five of Mu Xiaokui's ribbons in the Village of Lu. This extends her end-of-chapter encounter to three phases, including a fight against Jade Dancer and Iron Fiend.
Completing that extended encounter rewards Fiend Saws, Wild Oriole Sword, and Fist Fragment - Core, a component of the Worldbreaker Fist enhancement for Iron Gauntlets. It's a worthwhile detour for players collecting equipment, because one encounter advances several weapon paths.
When should you explore instead of pushing the story?
Explore when you have a new way to interact with an obstacle, a side quest leading toward equipment, or an unexplored branch near your route. Push the story when a reward explicitly depends on a Phantom Edge or regional change you have not reached yet.
Revisit regions after obtaining the right Phantom Edge
Several Soul Temper materials sit behind specific obstacles. Match the tool to the blockage rather than repeatedly checking the same inaccessible chest.
| New access tool | Where it becomes useful | Reward you can pursue |
|---|---|---|
| Flaming Mane | Burn brambles at the Black Serpent House in the Village of Lu | Reinforced Bowstring and Serpent Venom Sac - Black |
| Bashpole | Smash the ground near Master Lan's home in the Village of Lu | Border Banner for Bastion |
| Tiger Cannon | Destroy the weakened wall near the Long Pillar in Weeping Creek Valley | Pigeon Feed for Bashpole |
| Flying Guillotine | Operate the dial at Moji's house after defeating Huangxing | Enhanced Chainsaw for Flying Guillotine |
| Repaired Illusory Pipa | Clear the fog blocking Pangzhen's theater | Thunder Core for Thunder Spear |
Tiger Cannon arrives near the end of the campaign, close to the point of no return. If a wall requires it, continue progressing until you have the cannon rather than spending an early visit searching for another entrance.
Check side quests tied to your preferred equipment
Myst's Tavern offers several equipment-related leads. The Star Performer, given by the Leading Opera Actress, takes you to Tianxiang Pavilion for Dancer's Ribbon, the Soul Temper material for Soft Snake Sword.
The Sword and the Way, started with Daoist Bi Di, leads to Bronze Essence for Tianxuan Bronze Sword. Returning to him after completing it also rewards Kuye Temple Sutra for Kuye Temple Prayer Beads. Prioritize that quest if you use either piece of equipment, because both enhancement paths benefit.
Return when the Crimson Forest changes
Later campaign progression through Mirage Estate in Pangzhen causes part of the Crimson Forest to become snow-covered, with frozen rivers opening access to the southern Sha-Chi Tower. Several enhancement materials become accessible around this stage.
At the tower's roof, speaking with Mu Xiaokui rewards Supreme Order Token for Wild Oriole Sword. Jade Dancer then offers a sparring encounter against both bodyguards, rewarding Heel Reinforcement Part for Fiend Saws. If you use those weapons, this return trip has a clear purpose.
Common mistakes
- Treating weapon levels as shared progress. Each weapon levels independently, so upgrading Sanguine does not level Sanguine Twin.
- Passing level 10 before comparing alternatives. Refunds above that level require a Weapon Reforge Talisman.
- Ignoring equipment tradeoffs. Tianxuan Bronze Sword's cheaper blocking comes with disabled parrying.
- Expecting one fragment to complete an enhancement. Serpent's Memory requires components collected across multiple Serpent Houses.
- Revisiting a Tiger Cannon wall too early. The required Phantom Edge arrives late in the campaign.
If you're struggling with a weapon's defensive demands, review the Sha-Chi, parry, and Ghoststep combat guide. Equipment perks such as Natural Order can change which defensive approach your setup supports.
Pro tips
- Inspect the next perk threshold before upgrading. Levels 5, 10, 15, and 25 unlock weapon perks, making them useful checkpoints for players deciding where to invest.
- Budget for the enhancement itself. Once you obtain a matching Soul Temper material, you still need 5,000 Remnant Dust to apply it.
- Use Phantom Edge map icons to plan return trips. Icons for tools such as Bashpole, Flaming Mane, and Tiger Cannon can point you toward places with hidden loot.
- Match enhancements to actions you already use. Song of Parting suits Parting Hooks users who parry blue-flash attacks, because those parries trigger its automatic counter.
