Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!

Introduction

Kanto's tall grass no longer hides every encounter. Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! puts wild Pokémon in plain sight and swaps most wild battles for carefully timed Poké Ball throws. This Nintendo Switch adventure RPG pairs that approachable catching loop with familiar turn-based battles, a constant Pikachu companion, and local co-op that lets a friend join the journey.

Overview

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! is a Nintendo Switch adventure RPG that revisits Kanto with Pikachu as a constant companion. Game Freak reshapes the familiar journey around visible wild Pokémon and a catching system influenced by Pokémon GO. Trainer battles retain turn-based combat, giving exploration and battling distinctly different rhythms.

The main adventure follows the pursuit of eight Gym Badges and a challenge against the Elite Four, with Team Rocket causing trouble along the way. Its foundation comes from Pokémon Yellow, but visible encounters change how players move through familiar routes. Building a team starts with spotting a Pokémon worth pursuing rather than waiting for a random encounter.

How does Pokémon catching work?

Most wild Pokémon encounters use timed Poké Ball throws instead of battles. Players aim for a shrinking target ring, with accurate throws improving the chance of a successful catch. A single Joy-Con supports throwing motions, while handheld play uses the Switch's built-in controls. Berries help make troublesome catches more manageable.

  • Motion-controlled Poké Ball throws
  • Timed catch bonuses
  • Turn-based trainer battles

Catching Pokémon also awards experience to the party, making collection part of team progression rather than a separate checklist. Repeated catches therefore have a practical purpose even when the Pokédex already contains that species. Trainer battles provide the tactical counterweight, with type matchups, move selection, and switching determining how a team handles opposing Pokémon.

Kanto and the partner Pikachu

Kanto connects towns, caves, and routes into a directed adventure rather than an open-world map. Familiar locations such as Viridian Forest and Mt. Moon give each stretch a recognizable identity. Pokémon appear within these spaces before an encounter begins, so exploration includes watching for particular species and deciding which ones deserve a detour.

Pikachu anchors the journey as more than the first member of the team. The partner rides along with the trainer, supports interaction and outfit customization, and learns special techniques that help overcome obstacles around Kanto. Another Pokémon can follow outside its Poké Ball, with some larger species serving as mounts. Those companions make the collection visible during travel, not only on a party screen.

Local co-op and Pokémon GO transfers

Local co-op lets a second player join the adventure on the same Nintendo Switch using another Joy-Con or a Poké Ball Plus. The support trainer helps catch Pokémon and joins trainer battles, where two allied Pokémon can face a single opponent. That numerical advantage makes shared play a gentler way through Kanto, rather than a separate campaign built around equal difficulty.

Pokémon GO connectivity gives compatible smartphone players another route into the collection. Eligible Kanto Pokémon transfer into the GO Park complex in Fuchsia City, where they can be caught for use in the Switch adventure. Transfers are one-way, so Pokémon sent into Let's Go cannot return to Pokémon GO. The link connects the mobile collection to a traditional RPG journey, while local co-op makes that journey easy to share on one screen.
