Silver Pines doesn't hand you its endings. The survival horror metroidvania from developer Wych Elm buries its three conclusions behind collectible hunts, moral choices, and a fog-covered town that punishes players who rush. Whether you're after the tragic Rest ending, the hollow Leave ending, or the true Live resolution, every path has hard requirements you can miss without realizing it. This guide covers all three branches in full, including the exact cassette tape thresholds, the five Gold Star locations for the Rest ending, and the boss-sparing window that most players accidentally blow through. You can reach all three conclusions in a single playthrough of Silver Pines, provided you save at the right moment.

What are the three endings in Silver Pines?

The game features three distinct narrative conclusions, each tied to Eddie Velvet's psychological state and how thoroughly you've explored the world.

EndingCassette Tapes RequiredBosses SparedCore Outcome
Leave0 to 14 tapesAnyEddie flees, but the nightmare follows him
Rest15 to 22 tapesAt least 2 of 3Eddie sacrifices himself to break the curse
Live (true ending)All 23 tapesAll 3 bossesEddie confronts his trauma and earns redemption

The Leave ending is the default for blind playthroughs. The Rest ending is what many consider the most emotionally resonant, even if it's not the canon resolution. The Live ending is the true conclusion, requiring maximum completionism and a strict pacifist approach during every major boss encounter.

How to get the Leave ending

This is the simplest branch to trigger. Head to Eddie Velvet from the payphone and kill him when the option appears. It's the only ending where you select that choice. A cutscene plays and the credits roll.

Thematically, the Leave ending represents denial. Eddie drives past the town limits, but the final shot of his rearview mirror shows the fog still trailing him. He hasn't resolved anything internally, so the nightmare simply relocates. The mechanical trigger is equally blunt: finish the game with fewer than 15 cassette tapes, or execute any of the three major town figures, and this is where you land by default.

One persistent community misconception is that picking up the rusted key in the drainage tunnels forces this ending. Testing confirms it doesn't. The rusted key opens a shortcut back to the starting area and also gates access to a flooded archive containing 3 cassette tapes, which are tapes you need for the other paths.

How to get the Live ending (true ending)

The Live ending is the hardest to achieve and the one the game considers its canonical resolution. Two strict conditions must both be met:

  • Collect all 23 cassette tapes scattered across the map
  • Spare all 3 major town figures (The Mayor, The Teacher, and The Doctor) during their boss encounters

Missing even a single tape locks you out permanently. The Steam achievement "True Survivor" only triggers when both conditions are satisfied simultaneously.

The boss-sparing mechanic is where most players fail. When a boss's health bar empties, they drop to their knees and a five-second window opens. Step back immediately and wait for the "Spare" dialogue prompt rather than pressing the melee button. Players who are mashing attacks to survive the encounter frequently trigger the execution animation before the prompt even appears on screen.

For locating missing tapes, areas with a faint blue aura on the map indicate a collectible is still present in that sector. The flooded archives (accessed via the rusted key in the drainage tunnels) contain 3 tapes that are easy to miss entirely if you rush through the dark, heavily guarded section.

How to get the Rest ending

The Rest ending sits between the other two in terms of requirements. You need between 15 and 22 cassette tapes and must spare at least 2 of the 3 major town figures. Meeting those hybrid conditions unlocks a unique "Let Go" dialogue prompt in the final confrontation, which triggers the Rest sequence and the "Martyr of the Pines" achievement.

The path itself involves more steps than the other two branches. After reloading your payphone save and choosing not to kill Eddie Velvet, you're teleported back to Downtown. Find Alice's body underwater and take her ring. You then need a second ring, which is locked inside a jewelry box requiring five Gold Stars to open.

Where to find all 5 Gold Stars

Gold Star 1: In the Rabbit Hole Bar, on a table in the middle of the room. Available early in the game.

Gold Star 2: Once you have the sledgehammer, take the ferry back to the first island and head south to the lighthouse. Smash the wall, climb up, and collect the Motel Room 3 key. At the motel, enter code 6671 on the panel to find the star.

Gold Star 3: After completing the cemetery location, return to the Downtown diner. The cowboy you encountered in a dream sequence is there, and he's been shot. Speak with him. The star is sitting next to him.

Gold Star 4: At the top of the mountain, near the northern building, speak with the girl in the yellow raincoat. She lies down afterward, and you collect the star from her.

Gold Star 5: After collecting all five Cable Car bells, return to the caravan where the man has been digging a hole. Grab his shovel from inside the caravan, then jump into the hole yourself and dig further down. The final star is at the bottom.

Once you have all five stars, place them in the jewelry box to retrieve the gold ring. Take both rings to the Rabbit Hole Bar, go behind the bar onto the stage, and insert both rings into the wall. The Rest ending begins from there, and there's a significant boss fight ahead, so make sure your inventory is prepared before you commit.

Getting to Eddie Velvet: the late-game route

Reaching the finale requires working through several gated areas in sequence. Here's the condensed version of what stands between you and the ending choice.

Church Hill is where you solve the Metal Cube puzzle in the Chapel Tower by matching the cubes to Father Jacob's symbol. Completing it lets you ring the bell and collect Cable Station Bell (B), one of five bells needed to activate the Cable Car. The bell also triggers a red-world descent, so don't expect to backtrack immediately.

The Sewers require both the Heavy Mechanical Cog and the Crank Handle to operate the Sluice Gate Mechanism. Arrange the movable cogs so the large cog on the right turns. Three Flow Control Valves also need to be operated in this section. For the Sewers boss, use ranged kiting with the North Star Shotgun (obtained from an NPC at the Quiet Hours Cafe) loaded with 12ga Slugs, and bring antidotes for the poison threat.

Mt. Siah Kopa yields two 40 A fuses. Both are needed, so don't leave the area with only one.

Thelend Broadcasting contains a cable puzzle in the recording booth, plus pickups for the Yellow Lens and Magenta Lens. A boss rematch also occurs here. The completion achievement "Dead Air, Final Cut" fires after finishing this area.

Finally, collect three Metal Spikes to trigger the final boss. This is a separate item requirement from the five Cable Car bells. Defeat that boss to reach Eddie Velvet and your ending choice.

How do you unlock all three endings in one playthrough?

The single-playthrough method works because of the payphone save directly before the Eddie Velvet encounter. Before you speak to him, save there. Then:

  1. Complete the Leave ending first by killing Eddie Velvet.
  2. Reload the payphone save.
  3. Spare Eddie and pursue the Live ending path (requires all 23 tapes and all 3 bosses spared from earlier in the run).
  4. Reload again for the Rest ending (requires 15 to 22 tapes and the five Gold Stars already collected).

The key is front-loading your collectible work. Gather all 23 cassette tapes, all 5 Gold Stars, and spare every boss figure during your main run. With that foundation in place, the payphone save gives you clean access to all three branches.
