To get the Biggoron Sword in the Ocarina of Time remake, buy the Giant's Knife from Medigoron, then finish the adult trading sequence that ends with Biggoron. Here's every step, the timers and what changed from the N64 game.
Key takeaways
- The Biggoron Sword comes from a 12-step trading sequence as adult Link, starting with the Pocket Egg in Kakariko and ending at Biggoron on Death Mountain.
- You need the Giant's Knife from Medigoron in Goron City first. It costs 200 rupees.
- Three steps are timed: the Odd Mushroom (4:00), the Eyeball Frog (2:30) and the Specialty Eye Drops (3:30).
- The remake's timers and some item names differ from the N64 version.
- The sword is two-handed, so you can't use a shield with it.
How do you get the Biggoron Sword in the Ocarina of Time remake?
You trade your way to it. As adult Link, you pass a chain of items between characters across Hyrule, and the last one gets you a receipt for a new sword from Biggoron, the giant Goron on top of Death Mountain. Hand him the receipt and the Giant's Knife, and he gives you the Biggoron Sword.
I believe I did this on the N64, because I did most of the game on the N64. But that was back in the time of magazines, so we'd read the magazine for the step-by-step. Not quite as easy as what we have now.
Where do you get the Giant's Knife?
From Medigoron in Goron City. He sells it for 200 rupees as adult Link. Your wallet in the remake starts at 200 rupees, so you'll need it full, or the Adult's Wallet, which raises it to 500.
The knife is two-handed, like the sword it becomes. In the original game it broke after a few hits, and Medigoron charged another 200 to fix it. It isn't clear yet whether it still breaks in the remake, so don't plan a fight around it. Buy it, keep it, and hand it over at the end.
What are all the trading sequence steps?
Here's the full chain in order. Every step is as adult Link.
- Pocket Egg: from the Cucco Lady in Kakariko Village. It hatches at dawn.
- Pocket Cucco: use it to wake Talon, who's asleep in a house in Kakariko.
- Cojiro: the Cucco Lady gives you a blue Cucco called Cojiro.
- Odd Mushroom: from the Master Craftsman's son in the Lost Woods. Go at night. You have 4:00 to get it to Granny's Potion Shop in Kakariko.
- Odd Poultice: Granny makes it for you. No timer.
- Poacher's Saw: give the Odd Poultice to Fado in the Lost Woods. No timer.
- Broken Goron Sword: take the saw to the Master Craftsman in Gerudo Valley. You need Epona to jump the broken bridge if you don't have the Longshot.
- Prescription: take the broken sword to Biggoron on Death Mountain. The Bolero of Fire and the Goron Tunic help here.
- Eyeball Frog: thaw King Zora with Blue Fire and give him the Prescription. You have 2:30 to get the frog to the Lakeside Laboratory.
- Specialty Eye Drops: the Lake Scientist makes them. You have 3:30 to get them back to Biggoron.
- Biggoron Receipt: Biggoron needs three days to make the sword. Play the Sun's Song six times in a row to skip ahead.
- Biggoron Sword: give him the receipt and the Giant's Knife.
You'll want the Bolero of Fire and the Sun's Song for this. If you haven't got them yet, see all 12 songs.
What are the timers in the Biggoron trade quest?
There are three, and these are the ones that catch people out:
- Odd Mushroom: 4:00, Lost Woods to Granny's Potion Shop.
- Eyeball Frog: 2:30, Zora's Domain to the Lakeside Laboratory.
- Specialty Eye Drops: 3:30, Lakeside Laboratory to Biggoron.
The Eyeball Frog is the tight one. Take the shortest route out of Zora's Domain, and don't stop for anything. The remake's Lake Hylia is shallow enough to walk through in most places, but walking is slower than you'd think, so stick to the path.
The Eye Drops run is the long one, from the lake all the way up Death Mountain. The Bolero of Fire warps you to Death Mountain Crater, which is the quickest way to get back up there.
What changed from the N64 version?
A few things:
- Timers: on the N64 the Odd Mushroom was 3:00, the Eyeball Frog 3:00 and the Eye Drops 4:00. In the remake they're 4:00, 2:30 and 3:30. So the mushroom is easier, and the frog and the eye drops are tighter.
- Item names: the Odd Potion is now the Odd Poultice, the World's Finest Eye Drops are the Specialty Eye Drops, and the Claim Check is the Biggoron Receipt.
- Lake Hylia: you can walk through most of the water now.
Nintendo hasn't listed these changes itself. For the bigger changes across the whole game, see what's different from the original.
Is the Biggoron Sword worth it?
I don't think so. Why does anyone remember the Master Sword but never remember the Biggoron Sword, right?
On paper it's the strongest blade you can get. In the original game it hit twice as hard as the Master Sword, and unlike the Giant's Knife, it never broke. But it's slow and two-handed, so you lose your shield while it's out. In the remake, it's still described as the most damaging weapon in the game, but no one has published exact numbers yet.
If you like big hits and you're happy dodging instead of blocking, it's worth the trip. If you're playing for the story, you can finish the game without it.
Is the trading sequence worth doing?
It depends how much patience you've got. I think a lot of it would have annoyed me at the time. But it was a time where we didn't have many games, so you kind of just had to play it. And if you'd spent a little bit of your pocket money on a magazine telling you how to do it, you were just going to keep doing it.
I think a lot of the old-school quests are frustrating to today's audience anyway. This one is mostly running between characters with a clock ticking. With the steps above in front of you, it's a lot less painful. It's also a long way from the main story, so it fits well alongside the dungeons in order once you're an adult.
