Backtracking is baked into every Metroidvania, and Well Dweller is no exception. The good news is that fast travel arrives earlier than you might expect, and once you have it, moving around the map stops being a chore. The system is called Tent Travel, and picking it up requires clearing the second boss and making a short detour through a newly accessible area. Here's exactly how to get there.
How does fast travel work in Well Dweller?
Well Dweller's fast travel system lets you warp between any tents you've discovered on your journey. There's no cost attached to using it, and you don't need to be standing at a tent to trigger a warp. Just open your map, hover your cursor over the destination tent, and hold the assigned button. That's the whole system.
The catch is that you have to unlock the Tent Travel item before any of that becomes available.

How to unlock Tent Travel: step-by-step
Step 1: Defeat The Swarm in The Bog
The Swarm is the boss of The Bog, a swarm of insects that serves as the second major boss encounter. You'll find this boss southeast of the queen's castle entrance, which is locked at this point in the game. Clear the fight before moving on.
Step 2: Unlock the Climb ability
Immediately after the fight ends, head right. You'll find a bird's nest in this room. Jump into it to unlock the Climb ability, which lets you scale walls and wall jump between them. This ability is required to reach the Tent Travel item, so don't skip the room.

Step 3: Navigate to the Night Garden
With Climb in hand, exit the bird's nest room to the right. In the next room, use the walls to climb upward until you reach the exit. Once you emerge, the text "The Night Garden" will appear on screen. You're close.
Continue upward a short distance. The Tent Travel item sits on the cliffside in this area. Pick it up and fast travel is yours.
Quick reference: unlocking Tent Travel
| Step | Location | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Bog (southeast of castle entrance) | Defeat The Swarm |
| 2 | Room to the right of The Swarm arena | Jump into bird's nest, unlock Climb |
| 3 | Next room after bird's nest | Climb walls to the exit |
| 4 | The Night Garden (cliffside) | Pick up Tent Travel item |
What can you do with Tent Travel?
Once you have the item, every tent you've already found becomes a fast travel destination. Open the map, select any tent, hold the warp button, and you're there. No currency cost, no cooldown mentioned, no requirement to be near a tent first.
This becomes particularly useful later when you're hunting down the 3 elevator parts scattered across the map. That quest sends you north, southwest, and northeast of the elevator, and running each leg on foot without Tent Travel is genuinely painful. Having the warp system active before you hit that content saves a lot of time.
Why unlock Tent Travel as soon as possible?
The Metroidvania loop depends on revisiting old areas with new abilities, and Well Dweller leans into that structure hard. The earlier you grab Tent Travel, the less time you spend retracing long corridors between objectives. Since the item is tied to the second boss rather than buried deep in the late game, there's no reason to delay going after it.
After clearing The Swarm and grabbing the Climb ability, the detour to the Night Garden adds maybe five minutes to your session. The payoff is a free, unlimited fast travel system for the rest of the run.

Well Dweller sits comfortably among the better recent entries in indie games, and its fast travel system is one of the small design decisions that keeps the experience from dragging.
