Minecraft added something players have wanted for 17 years with the Wilderness Bound update: the ability to actually sit down. Cushions are the block making that happen, and they're more flexible than the name suggests. You can use them as campfire seating, decorative ground cover around trees, or the foundation of a proper sofa build. Getting your hands on the crafting recipe takes a few minutes, and once you have it, the only real limit is how much wool you can stockpile.
How do you unlock the Cushion crafting recipe in Minecraft?
The recipe unlocks the same way most recipes do: find one in the world and pick it up. Abandoned Camps are the fastest source. These structures almost always have at least one Cushion sitting near the campfire, and they spawn across forested biomes, not just the new Dappled Forest. Their tents are built from Wool Steps, which makes them fairly easy to spot even from a distance, especially since the default color is white.
In Creative Mode the recipe is available from the start, so you can skip the exploration step entirely.
tip
Abandoned Camps often contain more than just Cushions. Check out the Minecraft Abandoned Camps guide for a full breakdown of every biome location and loot table, including diamonds and iron gear.
The recipe is straightforward. Place 3 matching Wool Slabs side by side in any single horizontal row of a crafting table grid. The Cushion you get will match the color of the slabs used, so all three slabs must be the same color or the recipe won't work.
Wool Slabs themselves are crafted by placing three matching wool blocks in a horizontal row, which yields 6 Wool Slabs. That means 3 wool blocks of the same color will get you enough slabs to produce 2 Cushions.

Changing Cushion color after crafting
You don't need to re-craft a Cushion from scratch to change its color. Place any existing Cushion next to a dye of your choice in the crafting grid and you'll get a Cushion in the new color. This is worth doing when you have leftover Cushions in colors you don't need rather than burning through extra wool.
tip
Unlocking several dye recipes before you start mass-producing Cushions saves a lot of wool in the long run. Dye recoloring is significantly cheaper than crafting new ones from scratch.

How does the sitting mechanic work?
Place a Cushion on any flat surface and interact with it. Your character sits down immediately. To stand back up, press your crouch key (left Shift on Java Edition by default) or the equivalent button on your platform.
Cushions work on slabs, stairs, snow layers, enchantment tables, and most other flat decorative blocks. That surface compatibility is what makes them genuinely useful for furniture builds rather than just a novelty.

Rules and limitations to know
Cushions require a solid block underneath them. Remove that support and the Cushion breaks and drops as an item.
They have no collision with most objects, which makes blending them into custom furniture much easier.
Cushions are stationary. Pistons cannot push them; attempting to do so breaks the Cushion and drops it.
They must always align horizontally with the grid.
warning
Don't place Cushions over blocks you plan to remove later. The Cushion drops as soon as its support disappears, so plan your furniture layout before committing to the base structure.
Building furniture with Cushions
The combination of surface compatibility and no-collision behavior opens up a lot of build options that weren't possible before. A basic sofa uses a row of Cushions on top of stair blocks, with snow layers or slabs filling in the armrest gaps. The Cushion's low profile sits naturally on the stair surface without clipping through anything.
For outdoor builds, green or lime Cushions placed around the base of trees read convincingly as moss patches. Decorative ponds can use blue or cyan Cushions as a flat water substitute in areas where actual water flow would be inconvenient to manage.
