The explorer's best friend in Minecraft
Before the Wilderness Bound update dropped, every long expedition in Minecraft came with a frustrating tradeoff: sleep in a bed and lose your home spawn, or skip sleep entirely and deal with Phantoms harassing you at dawn. Straw Beds fix that. They let you sleep through the night without touching your spawn point, then vanish after a single use. Simple, disposable, and genuinely useful once you understand how they work.

What do you need to craft a Straw Bed?
The recipe is about as low-effort as crafting gets. You only need one material:
Hay Bales show up naturally around animal pens and horse stables in villages, so if you pass through one early in a run, grab a few. You can break them by hand with no tool required. If you have a wheat farm already running, turning surplus wheat into Hay Bales and then into Straw Beds is a reliable way to stock up before any major exploration push.
How to craft a Straw Bed step by step
The recipe works at any crafting station, including a standard Crafting Table:
- Open your Crafting Table.
- Place all 3 Hay Bales horizontally across any single row.
- Collect the 4 Straw Beds that appear in the output slot.
- Move them to your inventory.
That's the whole process. No dyes, no wool, no secondary materials. It's faster to craft than a regular bed and doesn't require hunting down sheep.

Straw Beds in Abandoned Camp
Where do Straw Beds spawn naturally?
Crafting is the most reliable method, but Straw Beds also generate inside Abandoned Camps, a structure introduced alongside the Wilderness Bound update. Every Abandoned Camp is guaranteed to contain at least one Straw Bed, and most have two, which is handy if you're playing with a friend.
Abandoned Camps are small and somewhat rare, but they spread across a wide range of biomes. Here's the full list of biomes where you can find them:
- Bamboo Jungle, Sparse Jungle
- Birch Forest, Old Growth Birch Forest
- Cherry Grove
- Dappled Forest
- Flower Forest, Forest, Windswept Forest
- Meadow
- Old Growth Pine Taiga, Old Growth Spruce Taiga, Snowy Taiga, Taiga
- Pale Garden
- Savanna
- Swamp
- Wooded Badlands
For a full breakdown of what else these structures contain, the Minecraft Abandoned Camps guide covers every loot table and location across all 18 biomes.
How do Straw Beds actually work?
Using a Straw Bed works exactly like a regular bed mechanically: place it on the ground, interact with it at night or during a thunderstorm, and you skip ahead to morning. The key differences are what make it worth carrying:
Spawn point stays unchanged. A regular bed resets your spawn to wherever you placed it, which is a problem if you're three biomes away from home and don't want to relocate your respawn. Straw Beds skip the night without touching that setting.
Single use only. The moment you wake up, or even if you leave the bed before morning, the Straw Bed breaks and disappears. It does not drop as an item at that point, so there's no recovering it once used.
Explodes in the Nether. Same as regular beds. Don't try it.
Villagers can't use them. Straw Beds don't count as valid sleeping spots for villager AI, so they won't compete with you for one.

Sleeping without spawn reset
Straw Bed vs. regular bed: which should you use?
The practical takeaway: use Straw Beds when you're exploring and want to keep your home spawn intact. Use regular beds when you're setting up a new base and want to anchor your respawn there.
When should you actually use Straw Beds?
The best time to carry Straw Beds is any session where you're venturing far from your main base. Multi-biome exploration runs, hunting for specific structures, or clearing out areas far from home all benefit from having a few in your inventory. Since each craft gives you 4 beds from 3 Hay Bales, the cost is low enough that stocking up before leaving is always worth it.
If you're planning a first-night survival setup before your base is established, Straw Beds are a good stopgap since they let you sleep safely without committing to a spawn location you might want to move later.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Straw Bed reset your spawn in Minecraft?
No. Sleeping in a Straw Bed skips the night cycle but leaves your existing spawn point completely unchanged. This is the defining reason to use one over a regular bed while traveling.
How many Straw Beds does one craft make?
Three Hay Bales placed in a single row on any crafting station produce 4 Straw Beds per craft.
Can you reuse a Straw Bed?
No. Each Straw Bed breaks after a single use and does not drop as an item. You can, however, break an unused Straw Bed before sleeping in it and carry it away for later.
Where is the best place to find Straw Beds without crafting?
Abandoned Camps are the only natural spawn location. They appear across 18 biomes and always contain at least one Straw Bed, usually two.
