GAME REVIEW: Nova Roma (Early Access)

Religion in Nova Roma is not window dressing. Pick the wrong god for your situation, neglect your temples, or ignore Divine Tasks, and your civilization stalls out while rivals pull ahead. Get it right, and you stack bonuses that compound across every system in the game.

What gods are available in Nova Roma?

Nova Roma ships with five gods, each tied to a specific area of your civilization. Jupiter, Ceres, Neptune, Vulcan, and Ares each offer distinct boons that affect happiness, production, food, industry, or military strength. The god you dedicate a temple to determines which boon activates in that temple's radius, so placement matters as much as the choice itself.

After testing each deity across multiple playthroughs, the most impactful early choice depends entirely on your map. Coastal starts benefit heavily from Neptune, while agricultural-heavy starts get more mileage from Ceres. Ares is situational but becomes very strong once you have towers up and enemies pressing your borders.

How to gain Favor from the gods in Nova Roma

Favor is the currency that makes the religion system work. Here is the full process:

  1. Build a temple (Small or Large)
  2. Dedicate the temple to your chosen god
  3. Complete Divine Tasks assigned by that deity
  4. Receive Favor as a reward for completing those tasks
  5. Spend Favor at a Small Temple to unlock the deity's boon
  6. At a Large Temple, throw a festival to generate additional Favor

Favor is not just for unlocking boons. It also gates technology across multiple research branches. Investing in Favor early means faster access to upgrades that push your civilization toward prosperity.

Which god should you pick first?

There is no single correct answer, but here is a practical framework based on your early priorities:

  • Expanding food output fast? Go Ceres. The +1 output to farms, vineyards, and orchards stacks quickly across three buildings and keeps your population fed during rapid expansion.
  • Starting near water?Neptune gives +1 fish yield to five buildings, which is a wider coverage area than Ceres and scales well if you have the fishing infrastructure.
  • Getting attacked early?Ares at +25% tower damage is a strong deterrent, but only if you already have three defense towers placed.
  • Struggling with unhappy citizens?Jupiter solves happiness problems across a 5-tile radius, which can be a lifesaver if your expansion outpaced your entertainment buildings.
  • Running a production-heavy build?Vulcan rewards fire-based industry, making it the go-to for players leaning into manufacturing output.

How do Large Temples change the Favor system?

Upgrading to a Large Temple opens up the festival mechanic. Festivals generate Favor in bulk compared to the steady trickle from Divine Tasks alone. If you are in a phase of the game where you need to push technology unlocks quickly, prioritizing a Large Temple upgrade pays off significantly. The trade-off is the additional build cost and the time investment to run festivals, so plan around your current resource situation before committing.
