You can get Coal in Palworld by mining nodes around Twilight Dunes at (-96, -120) or Deep Sand Dunes at (319, 498). Once you reach level 37, the Coal Quarry lets Mining Pals produce it at your base, making repeat collection trips optional.

If Refined Ingot or Carbon Fiber production keeps stalling, start with a mining trip, then save 100 Coal for the Quarry. That first batch helps turn a recurring supply run into a base job. You can also collect Coal through certain Pal drops or use the Ancient Material Synthesizer much later.

Which Coal farming method should you use?

For Palworld 1.0, the practical progression is manual mining first, followed by Coal Quarry production at level 37. The mining locations below also apply to v1.0.5; later updates may change resource placement or unlock requirements.

MethodRequirementBest forMain drawback

The Coal Quarry is the sensible long-term target because you can build it at your base instead of choosing your base location around natural Coal deposits. Before level 37, a marked mining route or a Coal outpost fills the gap.

Where should you mine Coal first?

Take the Twilight Dunes route near Anubis

Start at (-96, -120), northeast of the Sealed Realm of the Winged Tyrant fast-travel point. Another Coal spot sits near Alpha Anubis at (-125, -84), so you can visit both deposits during the same trip.

These locations give you a compact desert collection route without sending you straight to Deep Sand Dunes. Bring heat-resistant equipment for the desert conditions.

Deep Sand Dunes is a strong dedicated Coal destination once you can handle the area. The Sealed Realm of the Swift and Sealed Realm of the Guardian spots are useful when you also need Ore for Refined Ingots.

Coal locationCoordinatesWhy visit?
Deep Sand Dunes(319, 498)Coal cluster west of the fast-travel point, with Stone nearby
Sealed Realm of the Swift(189, -39)Coal and Ore south of the fast-travel point
Sealed Realm of the Guardian(288, -21)Coal, Ore, and Stone west of the fast-travel point
Bamboo Grove(-168, -220)Coal cluster in a mild-climate region
Gobfin's Turf, Verdant Brook(266, -216)Coal cluster near fast travel in a mild climate
Dry Sandy Beach, Mt. Obsidian(-604, -724)Another Coal option when you are already visiting Mt. Obsidian

Bamboo Grove and Verdant Brook are useful alternatives if you want to avoid desert heat. Mt. Obsidian needs heat resistance level 2, making it a less convenient destination for a Coal-only trip.

How do you automate Coal at your base?

Unlock and build the Coal Quarry

Open the Ancient Technology tree at level 37 and spend 5 Ancient Technology Points on the Coal Quarry. Its construction materials are:

MaterialRequired amount
Stone70
Paldium Fragment30
Ancient Civilization Parts10
Coal100

Ancient Civilization Parts come from boss Pals and Expedition rewards, so mining alone will not cover this construction bill. Once the Quarry is built, assign a Pal with at least Mining level 1; higher Mining levels shorten its production cycle.

Is a natural Coal outpost still worth building?

Before level 37, a Coal outpost can keep production moving while you do other activities. Place a Palbox so the base covers a Coal cluster, then assign 2-3 Pals with Mining level 3 or higher.

Once the Quarry is available, natural Coal deposits become optional rather than a requirement for your production base. Compare the best Palworld base locations before committing an outpost to Coal alone, especially if you also need an Ore supply.

Which Pals should you assign to Coal?

Check Mining work suitability, not the Pal's combat level. A high-level Pal with Mining level 1 or 2 cannot mine wild Coal nodes, although it can work at a Coal Quarry.

Palworld 1.0 expanded Work Suitability levels, so the Mining values below differ from older early-access recommendations.

PalMining levelBest forWhy choose it?
Aegidron8High-level mining setupsHighest Mining level among these choices
Astegon7Dedicated late-game miningHigh Mining suitability for clearing nodes
Blazamut7Late-game Coal productionAnother high-suitability miner
Anubis6Bases with mining and crafting workAlso has Handiwork level 6
Reptyro5Bases producing Refined IngotsAlso has Kindling level 5 for furnace work
Digtoise4Mid-game Coal collectionMeets the wild-node requirement and spawns in Twilight Dunes

Reptyro is a practical pick when your Coal operation feeds a furnace: it can mine and handle Kindling work. Anubis suits a mixed production base because its Handiwork level 6 also supports crafting jobs.

Wild Digtoise are level 33-44 on Palpagos. It is a mid-game option, not something to treat as an effortless starter catch simply because it appears near Coal.

What are the other ways to get Coal?

Produce it with the Ancient Material Synthesizer

The Ancient Material Synthesizer unlocks at level 78 for 5 Technology Points. Building it requires 10 Ancient Civilization Cores and 50 Paloxite Ingots.

Assign a Pal with Mining level 6 to produce Coal there. It is a late-game alternative, but the level 37 Quarry is available much earlier and already handles ongoing Coal production.

Collect Coal through Pal drops

Blazamut, Blazamut Ryu, and Pierdon can drop Coal. Mining remains the better primary farm because fighting Pals adds combat and spawn-search time to each collection run.

PalCoal dropWhere it fits
Regular Blazamut10, guaranteedBonus Coal while fighting regular spawns
Blazamut Ryu10, guaranteedRaid-related bonus loot, not an overworld route
Pierdon4-5, guaranteedBonus Coal alongside its Ore and Sulfur drops

Regular Blazamut and Pierdon appear on Flamepulse Islet. The Mt. Obsidian Alpha Blazamut has a different drop table and does not provide the regular Blazamut Coal drop.

The Blacksmith in Training can also give you 30-40 Coal during a base visit. Treat that as a welcome extra rather than a supply plan; the gift is not guaranteed.

What do you craft with Coal?

Refined Ingot and Carbon Fiber are the main reasons to establish steady Coal production. Each takes 2 Coal, but they use different workstations: Refined Ingots are furnace products, while Carbon Fiber is made at a Production Assembly Line.

If Coralum Ingot is your next crafting target, account for its 5 Coal cost before committing your stock elsewhere. Use the Coralum farming guide to plan that resource run alongside your Coal collection.

Common mistakes

  • Assigning an unsuitable miner: Wild Coal nodes require Mining level 3. A Mining level 1 Pal belongs at the Quarry instead.
  • Waiting until level 53 for the Quarry: In Palworld 1.0, its unlock is level 37 and costs 5 Ancient Technology Points.
  • Looking for Carbon Fiber in a furnace: Its Coal recipe belongs at a Production Assembly Line.
  • Farming Alpha Blazamut for Coal: The regular Blazamut's guaranteed 10 Coal drop does not apply to the Mt. Obsidian Alpha.

Pro tips

  • Upgrade your pickaxe for manual runs. Metal Pickaxe unlocks at Technology level 11, Refined Metal at 34, and Pal Metal at 44. Since 1.0, better tiers mine faster and return more Coal per node.
  • Check your miner's passives. Artisan adds +50% Work Speed, while Lucky adds +20%, helping assigned Quarry workers finish cycles faster.
  • Watch your carrying load. Coal has a weight of 5 per unit, so a productive trip can become a heavy one quickly.
  • Collect Ore with your Coal. The Swift and Guardian deposits contain both, matching the two ingredients required for Refined Ingots.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum tool needed to mine Coal?

A Stone Pickaxe, unlocked at Technology level 1, can mine Coal. Better pickaxes improve mining speed and Coal yield, so use the highest tier you have unlocked.

Does Coal respawn?

Yes. Wild Coal nodes return about 30 minutes of real time after being broken. If a deposit is empty after a collection run, give it time before returning.

Can you buy Coal from merchants?

No merchant stocks Coal for purchase. The Blacksmith in Training can give 30-40 Coal as a visit gift, but that is separate from merchant inventory.

Where can you find the other rare crafting materials?

For other Palworld 1.0 material hunts, use the rare resource locations guide to plan your next collection route.
