The darkness in Silent Hill: Townfall is not just atmosphere. Miss the flashlight and you will walk past collectibles, puzzle clues, and key items without ever knowing they were there. The good news is that both the flashlight and its batteries sit in the same building, Zoe's House, and the whole thing takes under five minutes once you know where to look.
Where is the flashlight in Silent Hill: Townfall?
The flashlight becomes accessible after you escape the Otherworld and return to the town square. From there, head to the Coastal District South area and look for Zoe's House, which sits opposite the "2" marker on your map. The front door is unlocked, so walk straight in.
Once inside, go to the ground-floor kitchen and move to the utility corner at the far end of the room. There is a drawer beside the washing machine and white laundry basket. Open it to collect the Flashlight (No Batteries). The item will not pick itself up automatically, so make sure you actually open the drawer rather than just passing through the room.
warning
The Flashlight (No Batteries) cannot be equipped until you combine it with the AA Batteries. Trying to use it before assembly will give you a "Cannot equip" message.

With the flashlight body in your inventory, head back to the hallway and climb the stairs to the upper floor. Enter the room on the left. You will see a mattress on the floor and a small wooden nightstand against the back wall. Open the nightstand drawer to collect the AA Batteries.
That is everything you need. Both components are in the same house, so there is no backtracking across the map required.

How do you combine the flashlight and batteries?
Open your inventory and navigate to the Key Items tab. Both the AA Batteries and the Flashlight (No Batteries) are stored there. Highlight the AA Batteries and press X on PlayStation or A on Xbox to select them, then choose Combine and select the Flashlight (No Batteries). The assembled item appears as Flashlight under your Equipment tab.
To toggle the light on and off, press R3 by clicking the right stick inward. The flashlight is a permanent key item and does not drain over time. You will never need to hunt for replacement batteries.
tip
Turn the flashlight on before entering the crawlspace beside the stairs in Zoe's House. The power meter in there can be difficult to read in the dark, and you will need it to restore electricity to the building.

Do enemies detect the flashlight light?
On most difficulty settings, enemies cannot see your flashlight beam at all, so you can keep it on freely without worrying about drawing attention. Nightmare difficulty is the exception. On Nightmare, using the flashlight can reveal your position to nearby enemies, so you will need to be more selective about when you switch it on.

What does the flashlight actually help with?
Beyond basic navigation, the flashlight is what makes several of the game's collectibles and puzzle clues visible. Dark corners throughout St. Amelia hide items that are easy to miss without a light source. The flashlight also interacts with the game's ray-traced lighting, which means it genuinely changes what you can see in a room rather than just brightening a flat overlay.
It is also worth noting that the flashlight is completely separate from the CRTV device. The CRTV detects enemies through walls, while the flashlight handles environmental lighting. Both are useful tools, and our CRTV signal tracking and RGB alignment guide covers that device in full if you need it.
Using the flashlight at Zoe's House power meter
One of the first practical uses for the assembled flashlight is inside Zoe's House itself. The building starts without electricity, which leaves the living-room computer offline and blocks access to the emails required for the Human Organ Box puzzle.
To restore power, you need the Electricard from the cash register at Peter's Newsagent, accessible through its rear fire exit. Once you have the card, return to Zoe's House and crouch through the low opening beside the stairs to reach the power meter. Insert the Electricard into the slot below buttons A and B. If the meter box is too dark to read, switch the flashlight on before you try to interact with it.
tip
The flashlight is required for this step in the preview build. Assembling it before attempting the crawlspace is not optional if you want to progress the Human Organ Box puzzle.
For everything else hidden across the game, the Silent Hill: Townfall guide collection covers resource containers, phone numbers, strange postcards, and more. If you are working through collectibles, the all Strange Postcard locations guide is a good next stop since several of those postcards sit in areas where the flashlight makes a real difference.
