The Happy Mask Shop in the Ocarina of Time remake lends you four masks to sell, then gives you the Mask of Truth for free. Here's every mask, who buys it, what it pays and what each one does.

Key takeaways

  • The Happy Mask Shop is in Hyrule Castle Town. You borrow a mask, sell it to someone who wants it, then pay the shop back.
  • The four masks you sell are the Keaton Mask, Skull Mask, Spooky Mask and Bunny Hood. Pay off all four and you get the Mask of Truth.
  • The Bunny Hood is the money-maker. The Running Man pays you a Gold Rupee, worth 200.
  • The Mask of Truth lets you hear what the Gossip Stones have to say.
  • New amiibo masks come with the Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo, due out in 2027.

How does the Happy Mask Shop work?

You borrow masks and sell them on. The Happy Mask Salesman lends you one mask at a time. You find someone who wants it, they pay you whatever they offer, and you go back and pay the shop its price. Then he lends you the next one.

The shop is in Hyrule Castle Town and only opens during the day, so play the Sun's Song if it's shut. If you don't have it yet, see all 12 songs. The guard at the Kakariko Village gate is what gets the errand going, because he's the first buyer.

You can make a profit on some masks and lose a little on others. Over the whole chain you come out ahead, mostly thanks to the Bunny Hood. The four masks cost you 110 rupees in total and bring in at least 255, so you finish about 145 rupees up, or 165 if the graveyard boy pays 50.

If the shelves are empty, show Zelda's Letter to the Kakariko gate guard first. In the original game, the shop also stayed empty until you'd finished Dodongo's Cavern.

What are all the masks and who buys them?

Here's the order, with what you owe the shop and what each buyer pays:

MaskYou owe the shopBuyerBuyer pays
Keaton Mask10 rupeesKakariko Village gate guard15 rupees
Skull Mask20 rupeesSkull Kid, Lost Woods10 rupees
Spooky Mask30 rupeesBoy in the Kakariko Graveyard, by day30 or 50 rupees

Where do you sell each mask?

Keaton Mask: the guard at Kakariko's north gate, the one blocking the path to Death Mountain. He pays 15, so you make 5.

Skull Mask: Skull Kid, on the stump in the Lost Woods. He only pays 10, so you lose 10 on this one, but it's the only way through the chain.

Spooky Mask: the boy in the Kakariko Graveyard during the day. Reports of the remake differ on whether he pays 30 or 50. In the original game he paid 30, which is what the shop charges.

Bunny Hood: the Running Man in Hyrule Field. You need to have finished Lord Jabu-Jabu's Belly before the shop will lend it. In the remake he pays a Gold Rupee, worth 200, on a mask that cost 50.

Once all four are paid for, the salesman gives you the Mask of Truth.

What does each mask do?

Mostly, they change how people react to you. A few do more than that:

  • Skull Mask: wear it in front of the Deku Scrubs on the Lost Woods stage and they let you carry more Deku Sticks.
  • Mask of Truth: lets you talk to Gossip Stones and hear what some characters and animals are thinking. On the Lost Woods stage it gets you more Deku Nut capacity.
  • Bunny Hood: worth more as a sale than to wear, but some players say it keeps the Stalchildren away in Hyrule Field at night.
  • Keaton Mask and Spooky Mask: these mostly get reactions from characters.

After the chain, you can also borrow the Goron, Zora and Gerudo masks. They change what characters say to you.

I can't remember what the masks did. I don't think I did every one in the original. I think I would have done some, because again, it was coming back to the magazine. That's how we played back then: a magazine with the step-by-step, and you followed it.

What does the Mask of Truth do?

It lets you hear the Gossip Stones. The stones are scattered around Hyrule, and with the Mask of Truth on, they give you hints. It also lets you read the minds of some characters.

I don't think I ever used it on the Gossip Stones. But I have seen someone doing it, because I've more recently watched people complete Ocarina of Time. Well, actually, they completed every single Zelda game. And I was just the loser watching them.

What are the amiibo masks in the Ocarina of Time remake?

They're new to the remake. Nintendo says that if you tap the new Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo figures, you'll get in-game masks that evoke a retro graphical style. The figures are coming in 2027, after the game's launch.

Nintendo hasn't said what the masks are called or whether they do anything beyond the look. Other Zelda amiibo give you in-game extras too.

To scan an amiibo, you need to have reached Hyrule Field with the Fairy Ocarina. Then pick the amiibo icon from the Quick Select menu on R and hold ZR to scan. Only Zelda series amiibo work.

What changed from the N64 version?

Two payouts look different:

  • Bunny Hood: in the original, the Running Man filled your wallet to the top. In the remake it's a Gold Rupee worth 200. The remake's wallets are different sizes too, starting at 200 and going to 500 with the Adult's Wallet.
  • Spooky Mask: the original paid 30. Some remake reports say 50.

Masks can also go on the D-pad shortcuts, so you can swap them faster. For more of what's changed, see what's different from the original.

When should you do the mask quest?

Early. The Keaton, Skull and Spooky masks only need young Link and a few rupees. The Bunny Hood needs Lord Jabu-Jabu's Belly done, so it fits neatly after the third dungeon. See the dungeons in order for where that falls.

It's a short side quest, and the Gold Rupee at the end makes it pay for itself.
