Into the Valley of Death is one of the meatier side stories in CONTROL Resonant, blending traversal, a genuinely odd cat-rescue puzzle, and a Hiss miniboss fight into a single package. You play as Dylan, sent into the depths of the Sinkhole on behalf of FBC agent Langston to recover his cat Alfred. What starts as a simple errand turns into a multi-stage chase through collapsing apartments above a bottomless pit.
The quest triggers automatically once you return to the Oldest House after completing the Recursions and Iterations main story mission. Pope will speak with Dylan in the lobby and mention that Langston has a personal request. Head to Langston's station at the FBC Field Office in Central to pick up the apartment keys and formally start the side story.
| Quest Details | Info |
|---|---|
| Starting Location | Downtown, Oldest House (talk to Pope) |
| Requirement | Complete Recursions and Iterations main quest |
| Zone | Evacuation Zone, The Sinkhole |
| Reward | Untapped Catnip Toy artifact |
Fast travel to the Evacuation Zone and enter the Sinkhole through the laundromat entrance in the western part of the zone. This is the same access point used during the Into the Sinkhole main mission. Before heading through the security door, grab the Power Upgrade shard from the chest to its left.
Once inside, follow the yellow tape markers on the floors and walls. Drop down to the platform marked Personnel Access, then keep tracing the tape through holes in the walls. You will pass through a larger room with stacked apartments and disabled lifts. One apartment near the top will be lit up. That is where FBC agent Dombrow is stationed. Speak with him, then turn right and head through the hole in the wall, following the tape until you see a brown door suspended over an abyss. Cross the bridge carefully and enter Langston's apartment.

Control Resonant Guide: How to Complete Into the Valley of Death Quest
Langston will communicate with Dylan through his wi-fi cat feeder in the living room. Interact with it to start the conversation, then complete three investigative actions:
Once Langston confirms Alfred is not inside, carry the cat feeder from the living room into the bedroom and place it next to the cat carrier. Interact with both together to load the feeder into the carrier, then pick up the carrier and head back out of the apartment.
After exiting Langston's apartment, follow the trail of broken potted plants heading southwest through the surrounding apartments. Alfred has been knocking them over as he moves, and each smashed pot points toward the next. If you lose the trail, look for dirty cat paw prints on the floor connecting one broken pot to the next.
The trail leads back to the main Sinkhole room where Dombrow is watching TV. Langston tells Dylan to find a bedroom with a soft bed, a working television, and music nearby, and no plants. The correct apartment is directly south of Dombrow's position on the same level. Look for a lit room visible through the chasm.
Once you place the carrier on the bed, three more steps are required before Alfred will enter:
After completing all three steps, leave the apartment entirely and jump to the other side of the chasm. After a short wait, you will hear Alfred mew and Langston celebrating. Return to the carrier to pick Alfred up.
The moment you pick up the carrier and head back toward Dombrow's position, you will hear a scream. When you reach his location, you will find his body. Follow the blood trail down and through a hole in the floor. Use the Elevate ability after dropping to land safely near the checkpoint totem below.
Head south from the checkpoint into a room with windows covering the ceilings and walls at disorienting angles. This is the arena for the final phase of the quest.
Maria is a Hiss enemy similar to the invisible Hiss types encountered earlier in the Sinkhole. She attacks immediately on entry. Use the Shift ability to close distance quickly and strike her with the Aberrant to strip her shadow shroud. Keep pressure on her until she drops to roughly 50% health, at which point she retreats into the walls and windows of the room.
This is where Alfred earns his keep. Place the cat carrier next to the red-glowing crack in the corner of the room. Alfred will then be able to intercept Maria as she moves through the walls, but you need to guide him correctly.
Maria's position inside the walls is indicated by a red glow moving from window to window in a predictable linear pattern. Your job is to call Alfred to a window just before Maria arrives at it.
The red glow will start avoiding windows where Alfred is waiting, so you need to anticipate where it is heading rather than chasing where it just was. You can use the Shift ability to reach windows on the walls and ceiling, which makes positioning much easier. After three successful intercepts, Maria re-emerges into the room and you can finish her off like any other Hiss enemy.
After Maria is defeated, pick up the cat carrier and carry it back up through the hole to Dombrow's body. Place the carrier next to his body in front of the TV. An FBC evacuation crew will collect both Alfred and the body, completing the quest.
The reward is the Untapped Catnip Toy artifact. Once activated and equipped, it reduces the damage Dylan takes from falling into bottomless pits, which is more useful than it sounds given how much of Control Resonant is built around vertical traversal over chasms.
To exit the Sinkhole efficiently, drop down the central hole to the original bottom where the diving bell is located and use the fast travel door there instead of backtracking up through the apartments.
