The Adventures of Elliot: The ...

Underwater areas in The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales are locked behind a single key item: the Diving Manual. You can swim on the surface from the moment you reach a lake, but actually submerging requires this progression unlock. Miss it and you will spend a lot of time staring at flooded corridors you cannot enter. Get it and a whole layer of the world opens up.

Why you cannot dive underwater yet

Diving is not a default ability in The Adventures of Elliot. The game treats it as a specialized skill tied to a key item rather than a movement option you start with. Until Elliot obtains the Diving Manual, pressing any button near deep water will only let him float on the surface. Many players assume they are missing a control binding or hitting a bug. They are not. The ability is simply gated behind a dungeon.

The dungeon in question is the Water Ruins, and it becomes accessible during the Age of Reconstruction as part of the main story objective to reach the Kingdom of Huther. The ruins sit to the south of where you first encounter Heurich. Swim around the east side of the lake and you will find the entrance.

How to unlock diving

Solving the tide-switch puzzles

The Water Ruins use a water-level mechanic throughout. Several ball switches raise or lower the tide, and the order you hit them determines which paths are accessible. Getting this wrong is the most common reason players feel locked out of the boss chamber.

Here is the correct sequence:

  1. Hit the ball switch on the middle platform to lower the water level and access the floor below.
  2. Head east and activate the mechanism there, then hit the ball switch to raise the water. This lifts you to the upper sections.
  3. Follow the upper path until you reach another ball switch. Hit it to lower the water again.
  4. Move to the opposite side where a gate locks you in with a group of enemies. Defeat them to clear the path.
  5. Descend the stairs and open the chest to collect the Blue Water Ruins Key.

Getting into the western wing

With the Blue Water Ruins Key in hand, backtrack to the entrance platform. The water level must be low at this point. If it is high, the lock on the western door is unreachable. Use the key to open the door, then hit the ball switch inside and cross the platform. Strike the ball on the opposite side to drain the remaining water and expose the stairway leading down to the boss chamber.

How to beat Faruki Capo

Faruki Capo is the boss guarding the Diving Manual. Direct attacks do nothing while the shell defense is active, so brute-forcing this fight wastes your healing items.

The correct approach:

  • Wait for Faruki Capo to start spinning.
  • Attack him to knock him across the arena toward the walls.
  • Hitting him into a wall causes knockback damage and makes him dizzy.
  • Once dizzy, the boss stops spinning and becomes vulnerable to standard attacks.
  • Repeat this cycle 3 to 4 times to finish the fight.

If Faruki Capo knocks you into the water during the fight, you take a small amount of damage and reset to the platform. Keep your distance during the spinning phase and wait for a clean angle to knock him into a wall.

Collecting the Diving Manual

After Faruki Capo goes down, a door opens to the final chamber. Walk in and open the red treasure chest. This grants Elliot the Diving Manual permanently. The ability is immediately active from this point forward.

The Adventures of Elliot Guide: How to Dive Underwater

How to dive underwater

Once you have the manual, diving is straightforward. Approach any Deep Water zone and hold the designated Dive button for your platform. Keep it held to stay submerged and navigate underwater. Release it and Elliot floats back to the surface.

The exact button varies by platform and your personal control configuration. Check the in-game controls list if you are unsure which input is mapped to diving on your setup.

What can you do underwater?

The Diving Manual is not just a story checkbox. It opens up a meaningful portion of the game's exploration layer. With it you can:

  • Swim through flooded corridors that were previously impassable.
  • Pass beneath floating logs blocking overworld routes.
  • Access hidden underwater pathways connecting areas.
  • Reach secret treasure locations in dungeon sub-floors.
  • Explore optional areas and shortcuts across multiple regions.

Many dungeons and overworld biomes contain collectibles and shortcuts that require diving. After finishing the Water Ruins, go back through earlier areas with water and check every lake and flooded passage you previously skipped. The game does not automatically mark underwater secrets on your map, so manually pinning bodies of water as you encounter them is a good habit.

For players working toward full completion, the Diving Manual is also tied to the True Ending route. Certain artifacts required for that ending are only reachable underwater, so treating this unlock as optional will lock you out of the game's best conclusion.
