Minecraft is heading underground and into the cold with its fourth drop of 2026. Revealed during the September 2026 Minecraft Live event, the 26.4 update brings a brand-new frozen biome, a hostile mob built entirely around ice, and a chain of interconnected crafting additions that all feed off one another. No official release date has been confirmed yet, but the evidence points toward a mid-December window. Here is everything Mojang has shown so far.
When does the Minecraft 26.4 winter update release?
Mojang has not locked in an official date, but the current best estimate sits around December 13-20, 2026. That window lines up with the studio's quarterly release cadence throughout 2026, and the previous year's Mounts of Mayhem drop also landed in the middle of December. Until Mojang makes an announcement, treat mid-December as a working target rather than a confirmed date.
tip
The official name of the 26.4 drop has not been revealed yet. Mojang typically announces update names closer to launch, so expect a formal reveal in the weeks before release.
The Ice Caves are the headline addition and the third entirely new biome Mojang has added to the base game in 2026. Unlike Dripstone or Lush Caves, Ice Caves generate specifically underneath frozen surface biomes, so you will only find them by digging below snowy and icy terrain.
The biome fills its chambers with packed ice, blue ice, calcite, and other frozen blocks. Standard stone and deepslate also appear throughout, so ore mining remains viable while you explore. The visual atmosphere is distinct from anything currently in the game, and the combination of glowing crystals on the floor and hanging icicles overhead gives it a genuinely different feel from other cave types.

Ice Crystals
Ice Crystals generate naturally on Ice Cave floors and serve as the biome's built-in light source. Their shape is similar to Amethyst clusters, but the texture is distinctly icy. Practically speaking, this means you can navigate Ice Caves without burning through torches, and you can also mine the crystals to take home for building. An ice-themed base lit entirely by Ice Crystals is one of the more obvious applications once you start collecting them.
Icicles
Icicles form on cave ceilings and can cluster into large stalactite-shaped formations. The key mechanic here is that they are not just decoration. When a light source hits them, they break loose and fall, dealing damage to anything standing underneath. This makes Ice Caves genuinely dangerous to light up carelessly. Placing torches or other light sources without checking the ceiling first is a fast way to take unexpected damage.
warning
Never place light sources in Ice Caves without scanning the ceiling first. Triggering multiple icicle drops at once can deal serious damage, especially in the early game when your armor is not yet upgraded.
What is the Frozen Zombie?
The Frozen Zombie is the update's new hostile mob. It spawns in snowy surface biomes and inside Ice Caves, so you will encounter it both above and below ground. Visually, it is covered in ice and snow, making it fit the biome rather than feeling like a reskin dropped into the wrong environment.
It has two attack modes. Melee hits apply a freezing effect to the player. Its ranged attack fires Ice Balls, and the damage those projectiles deal scales directly with their speed on impact. Standing close to a Frozen Zombie when it throws an Ice Ball means taking more damage than if you back away and let it travel. That mechanic rewards keeping your distance, which is worth knowing before your first encounter.

What can you craft with Ice Balls?
When a Frozen Zombie is defeated, it drops Ice Balls as an item. Those drops feed directly into two new crafting recipes, which is what makes the Frozen Zombie worth farming rather than just avoiding.
Potion of Freezing
Ice Balls can be brewed into a Potion of Freezing. Because it is a negative-effect potion, the splash variant is the practical choice. Throw it at enemies to slow them down and apply minor damage. In PvP, a well-timed splash Potion of Freezing can give you enough of an opening to finish a fight. In PvE, it works well against fast-moving mobs that are difficult to hit consistently.
Arrow of Freezing
The second crafting option is the Arrow of Freezing, a new tipped arrow variant that applies the freezing effect on hit. Combining ranged damage with a slow makes it useful against tougher targets where controlling mob movement matters. The ability to apply the freezing effect from a distance before a mob closes in is a meaningful tactical option, particularly in Ice Caves where the environment already limits your movement.
How does the 26.4 update fit into Minecraft's 2026 roadmap?
The 26.4 drop is the fourth quarterly update of the year, following the Wilderness Bound release in 26.3. Mojang has also confirmed that The Sift, a new dimension, is planned for 2027, making 26.4 the final major content drop before the game moves into a new dimension entirely.
