Introduction

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom takes everything Breath of the Wild built and tears it open at the seams. Link's new abilities, a sky full of floating islands, and a physics-driven crafting system that lets players solve problems in ways Nintendo never anticipated make this one of the most creative open-world adventure games on Nintendo Switch.

Overview

Tears of the Kingdom picks up after the events of Breath of the Wild, but it wastes no time establishing its own identity. A mysterious substance called gloom spreads across Hyrule, Zelda vanishes beneath Hyrule Castle, and Link wakes up on a sky island with a stranger's arm grafted onto his body. The setup is darker and more confident than its predecessor, and the story carries genuine weight throughout.

The game runs on Nintendo Switch and was developed by Nintendo EPD Production Group No. 3, releasing on May 12, 2023. What separates it from most open-world games is not the size of the map but the density of possibility within it. The same geography from Breath of the Wild returns, but the addition of sky islands above and Depths below effectively triples the playable space.

Gameplay and mechanics: what can Link actually do?

Link's four core abilities are where Tears of the Kingdom earns its reputation. Ultrahand lets players pick up and attach objects to build vehicles, contraptions, and weapons. Fuse combines materials with weapons to create new tools. Ascend passes Link through ceilings. Recall rewinds an object's movement through time. Each ability is simple to understand and deeply exploitable in practice.

Key mechanics at a glance:

  • Ultrahand for object construction and manipulation
  • Fuse for weapon and shield crafting
  • Ascend for vertical traversal through solid surfaces
  • Recall for reversing object trajectories
  • Autobuild for recreating saved contraptions

The genius of this system is that it has no single correct answer. Players regularly find solutions that Nintendo's designers never scripted, and the game accommodates them without complaint. A boulder, a plank, and a fan can become a flying machine if the geometry cooperates.

World and setting

Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom is not a passive backdrop. The gloom corrupting the ground punishes careless exploration by draining Link's maximum hearts on contact, which keeps even familiar regions feeling threatening. The sky islands introduce a verticality that changes how traversal works, while the Depths operate under permanent darkness and require Brightbloom seeds to navigate safely.

The Zonai, an ancient civilization said to have descended from the sky, thread through both the story and the world design. Their technology powers the construction system and their ruins populate the sky islands. The narrative connects their history to Hyrule's founding mythology, giving the lore more structural depth than Breath of the Wild ever attempted.

Innovation and unique features

No other mainstream open-world game in 2023 offered a physics sandbox this flexible paired with a traditional adventure structure. The crafting system does not require menus or materials management in the usual sense. Players grab objects in real time, stick them together, and test results immediately. Failure is fast and funny. Success is genuinely satisfying.

The Sages system, which ties story progression to combat companions based on the game's five temples, adds tactical variety to encounters without overcomplicating combat. Each Sage ability has a dedicated activation that players can trigger mid-fight, and the temples themselves rank among the most mechanically distinct dungeons in the series.

Impact and legacy

Tears of the Kingdom landed with critical scores in the high 90s across major review aggregators and sold over 20 million copies within its first year. That commercial performance matters less than what the game demonstrated: that physics-based puzzle design and open-world adventure can coexist without either compromising the other. The construction mechanics influenced how players and developers think about player agency, and the game's approach to vertical exploration set a new reference point for the genre. A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game has also been made available, extending its reach to Nintendo's newer hardware.
